What is a Prompt?

A prompt is anything you type into an AI to get a response. Understanding this simple idea is the foundation for everything else on this site.

Think of giving directions to someone new in town. If you say "go somewhere fun," they'll be lost. But if you say "drive north two miles, turn left on Main, look for the green awning" — they'll get there every time. A prompt works exactly the same way.

Simple definition: A prompt is what you type to an AI. It can be a question, a command, or a description. The quality of what you get back depends almost entirely on the quality of what you put in.

The single most important idea on this site

AI doesn't know what you meant to ask — it only knows what you actually typed. Generic input produces generic output. Specific input produces specific, useful output.

Why Isn't AI Giving Me What I Want?

This is the #1 frustration beginners face. Here are the five most common reasons — and exactly how to fix each one.

AI isn't broken. It's responding to exactly what you asked. The problem is usually that what you typed isn't what you meant. Every one of these is fixable in under 10 seconds.

1. Your Prompt is Too Vague

The AI can only work with what you give it. Generic input produces generic output — every time.

5. You Gave Up After One Try

AI conversations are iterative. If the first answer isn't right, refine it — don't start over. The AI remembers your whole conversation.

Pro tip: After any AI response, try: "Make it shorter," "Change the tone to casual," "Add a specific example about X," or "Redo this but write it for a 6th grader." These follow-ups are often more powerful than rewriting from scratch.

Every effective prompt has up to four ingredients. You don't need all four every time — but knowing them gives you a formula you can always fall back on.

Think of a great prompt like a recipe. A few key ingredients combined well produce something far better than any single ingredient alone.

Role prompts are underrated by everyone. "You are a patient kindergarten teacher" changes the AI's vocabulary, depth, and tone entirely — in a single sentence. Try it on any topic you're struggling to understand.

An AI agent is an LLM that can take actions in the world — calling APIs, searching the web, reading files — based on a goal. Building one well requires thinking about loops, tools, and failure modes from the start.

Write tool descriptions like user stories. The model reads your description to decide when to call a tool. "Search for current information. Use when asked about recent events or facts you're not confident about." beats just calling it "web_search."

How Do I Write a Good Prompt?

There's no magic formula, but there are four ingredients that consistently separate useful AI responses from frustrating ones. Here's how to use them.

Most bad prompts fail for the same reason: they give the AI the destination but no directions. A good prompt doesn't need to be long — it just needs enough specifics that the AI knows who it's talking to, what it's supposed to do, and what the answer should look like.

The one-sentence rule: If a stranger read your prompt with no other context, would they know exactly what you want and why? If not, add more.

The Four Ingredients of a Good Prompt

Role — tell AI who to be

A single sentence assigning a role changes the vocabulary, depth, and tone of every response. "You are a nutritionist" gets you different output than "you are a personal trainer" — even if you ask the exact same question.

Task — lead with an action verb

Start with exactly what you want done. Write, Explain, Summarize, Compare, Rewrite, Create, List, Translate, Simplify, Critique — the verb does a lot of work. Vague nouns ("something about X") leave AI guessing.

Context — give AI the background it needs

AI doesn't know who you are, what you already know, why you're asking, or what you're going to do with the answer. Any of those details you share will improve the response. You don't need all of them — just the ones that matter for your specific request.

Format — specify what the answer should look like

If you want bullet points, say so. If you want a table, say so. If you want it under 100 words, say so. AI will match whatever structure you request — but if you don't ask, it will guess, and it might guess wrong.

You don't need all four every time

A simple factual question — "What year did the Berlin Wall fall?" — needs none of the four. The four ingredients matter most when your first attempt didn't produce what you wanted, or when the task is complex enough that AI needs guidance to get it right the first time.

Quick diagnostic: If the AI's response missed the mark, ask yourself which ingredient was missing. Too generic? You needed more context. Wrong structure? You needed a format. Too shallow or too deep? You needed a role. Went off-topic? Your task wasn't specific enough.

This is the ingredient most teachers forget — and the one that most prevents generic output. Tell AI what prior knowledge to build on and what gaps to address, and the plan will match your actual students, not a hypothetical class.

Length constraints, structure, language matching. Without format instructions, output length and structure varies unpredictably — which breaks UI layouts and creates inconsistent user experiences.

Keep all responses under 150 words unless the user explicitly asks for more detail. Use numbered steps for any instructions that require more than 2 actions. Respond in the same language the user writes in. Never use markdown formatting — plain text only. No bullet points, no headers, no bold or italic text. This renders in a plain-text chat interface.

Topic focus is one of the most common production challenges. Users inevitably test the edges — intentionally or not. A well-designed system prompt anticipates this and handles out-of-scope requests gracefully rather than either refusing bluntly or complying with anything.
